Rug Weaving Illustrations

Step-by-step illustrations explaining the process of weaving from primitive to modern techniques. Plus illustrations showing the nine weave types. Parts of this section can be viewed for free under LESSONS

Describes the origins of the first fabrics woven by man by interlacing/interlocking warps and wefts, followed by the addition of hand-tied knots to produce the first rugs.

Look at how the size and type of material influences the rug. Additionally, review how the tension exerted by the weaver influences the warps and wefts as seen on the back of a rug. These characteristics also spurs the next evolution in weaving where it led to more knots woven in more compact ways.

Discover the basic nine variations which weavers from Iran (Persian) employ to create beautiful works of art.
