Project Description
Detailed Weave Patterns
There are four main factors which dictate how a weave pattern (the knot formation visible from the back of a rug) may look, they are:
SIZE: The thickness of the knot, warp and weft
TENSION: The amount of tension on the knot, warp and weft
DISTANCE/SPACING: How far apart warps are in relation to their size
MATERIAL: The composition (wool, cotton, silk, animal hair, etc.)
The goal of this eBook is to show a closeup of each weave pattern that is unique to a certain region, so that you will be able to recognize and identify different pieces.
When weaving a rug, all materials – warps, wefts and knots – are competing for space. To get the right look, you need to employ the appropriate combination of material sizes. Warp, weft and knot size and tension also play an important role. In general, more force and tension will have the same effect as larger or thicker materials.
WARPS: Tighter warps allow for more compactness in the weave. Looser warps allow for less compacting and can create a bubble effect. Typically, once the warps have been strung on the loom, they will dictate the horizontal knot count.
WEFTS: Tighter wefts allow less compacting. Looser wefts allow for more compactness in the weave. The angle the weft is applied affects the amount of weft used – which has a visual effect on the back of the rug.
KNOTS: To achieve the number of knots per square inch intended by the design of the rug, the appropriate amount of wool (typically) material is needed.
KNOTS PER SQUARE INCH: Each design, whether traditional and woven from memory or the most extravagant rug available, has an appropriate “knot per square inch” count to keep the design consistent.
